Our Research
Research carried out by members of the Unit includes laboratory-based metabolic research, clinical research in hospital and in community settings, and epidemiological studies of food consumption. Areas of interest include folate metabolism, vitamin B12 metabolism, lipid metabolism, postprandial metabolism, type 2 diabetes mellitus, energy expenditure and substrate utilisation, clinical nutrition, nutrition and coeliac disease, nutritional issues for women, consumer attitudes to food, food additive intake, food and nutrition policy. Research groups are based in the Trinity Centre for Health Sciences, St James's Hospital and in the Department of Biological Sciences in DIT Kevin Street. Collaborative links exist with colleagues in other departments in Trinity College and in other institutions in Ireland, the UK, Europe, USA and Australasia.
Research funding
Research grants have been obtained from national, international and commercial sources. Sponsors include the National Institutes of Health (USA), the European Commission, the Department of Agriculture, the National Dairy Council, Trinity College Dublin, The Irish Heart Foundation and a variety of nutritional companies.
