I am delighted to announce the Provost’s Teaching Awards for 2011-2012. This is a wonderful opportunity to recognise and reward those who have made an outstanding contribution in the pursuit of teaching excellence, and in delivering a critical part of our core mission. The prestige of the award reflects the value which we in Trinity place on promoting teaching as a scholarly activity, and the importance we attach to enriching the learning opportunities of our students. This year the scheme is in two parts, with nominated candidates submitting a 20 page application form, and short-listed candidates proceeding to the final stage when a sample class is videoed. This process allows candidates to encourage lecturing staff to reflect critically on their teaching practice, and therefore is something to be greatly encouraged. We hope to provide recognition for excellent teaching, reward lecturers who are creative in their approaches to teaching and learning, and share best practice across College. This is also an opportunity to encourage lecturers to consider other approaches to course design, delivery and assessment, and reaffirm that curriculum development, teaching, learning, assessment and evaluation, are important activities in College requiring high level expertise. Further details about the scheme can be found at (www.tcd.ie/CAPSL/awards) as well as details on how to nominate colleagues. I have also sent an email to our students encouraging them to nominate lecturers who have inspired them during their time at Trinity. We are also considering ways of recognising and rewarding the work of our postgraduate teaching assistants, our postdoctoral staff, and staff on the casual payroll, and hope to be able to develop schemes in those areas in the near future. Best regards Patrick Prendergast
