Electronic Journals and Databases

The Library subscribes to a comprehensive range of electronic journals (e-journals) and databases to support your research and learning needs. These e-journals and databases can be accessed via the E-journals Only link, and Databases & E-Books link on the Library’s website - http://www.tcd.ie/Library/.

Guidelines for accessing E-journals and Databases from off-campus

  1. Go to the Databases and E-books page (http://www.tcd.ie/Library/collections/databases.php), the E-journals Only page (http://atoz.ebsco.com/home.asp?Id=1324) page, or the Subject Guides page http://www.tcd.ie/Library/support/subjects/index.php
  2. Select the resource from the alphabetical listings or carry out a journal title search
  3. From the results screen select the electronic resource record
  4. Click on the record and select ‘‘TCD-affiliated users may click here for access’’.
  5. When presented with the login page enter College username and network login password to access the e-journal, e-book or database

Databases

A selection of the databases which are of medical interest are described below. These resources can be accessed from the Library website under the ‘Databases & E-Books’ link

PUBMED –

  • PubMed provides access to MEDLINE®, the National Library of Medicine’s premier bibliographic database containing citations and author abstracts from approximately 5,200 biomedical journals published in the United States and in other countries.
  • The scope of MEDLINE includes such diverse topics as microbiology, delivery of health care, nutrition, pharmacology and environmental health. The categories covered in MEDLINE include everything from anatomy, organisms, diseases, psychiatry, and psychology to the physical sciences.
  • MEDLINE currently contains over 17 million references dating back to 1948.
  • Coverage is worldwide, but most records (about 90%) are from English-language sources or have English abstracts.
  • Approximately 79% of the citations are included with the published abstract.
  • PubMed should be accessed from the Trinity Library website as links to the fulltext of articles are provided.

EMBASE

EMBASE from Elsevier B.V. is a comprehensive pharmacological and biomedical database renowned for extensive indexing of drug information from 7,000 journals published in 70 countries. It is one of the most current biomedical databases available. EMBASE indexes  journals not indexed in the other major databases and should always be included when doing a comprehensive search. EMBASE contains 18 million records with 600,000 records added annually.

Cochrane Library

This database is an excellent source of reliable evidence about the effects of health care. It provides bibliographic data, abstracts, systematic reviews (background, methodology, results, discussion and conclusions of the studies) and protocols on the effects of healthcare. A key evidence based healthcare resource, it includes the following databases- The Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Database of Abstracts of Reviews of Effectiveness (DARE) The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL) The Cochrane Datbase of Methodology Reviews.  The Cochrane Methodology Register.

CINAHL / ProQuest (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature)

The CINAHL database is the authoritative source of information for the professional literature of nursing and allied health. The database also includes relevant materials from seventeen allied health disciplines. The CINAHL database provides references to books, book chapters, dissertations, selected conference proceedings, standards of professional practice and research instruments. The CINAHL database includes citations from 2,593 journals. Of the 2,593 journals indexed, 1,798 include author abstracts.

Web of Science

The Institute for Information Science (ISI) publishes the widely used Science Citation Index, Social Science Citation Index and Arts and Humanities Citation Index which index over 8000 journals.  This service provides online access to these tools.  Distinct from other index, ISI Web of Science offers access to the articles’ cited references - the bibliographic or reference lists, of the indexed articles. The database can be searched by author, source title, and most importantly, cited reference. Within ISI Web of Science, you can examine a documents historical origin (the cited reference) and easily follow links to its current position in the research literature (times cited)

SCOPUS

Scopus is the largest abstract and citation database. It covers:
Nearly 18,000 titles from more than 5,000 international publishers, including coverage of

  • 16,500 peer-reviewed journals (inc > 1200 Open Access journals)
  • 600 trade publications
  • 350 book series
  • Extensive conference coverage (3,6 million conference papers)

38 million records, of which:

  • 19 million records include references going back to 1996 (78% include references)
  • 19 million pre-1996 records go back as far as 1823

Scopus also covers 435 million quality web sources, including 23 million patents.

PsycINFO

PsycINFO, produced by the American Psychological Association, contains references on psychology and related disciplines. It indexes journal articles, book chapters and books and dates back to 1887. Good resource for audiology, hearing tests, and related subjects. Abstracts (not full-text) psychological literature (1300 Journals, Book Chapters, Books, Technical Reports, Dissertations) from 1887 to the present, all in the field of psychology and psychological aspects of related disciplines, such as medicine, psychiatry, nursing, sociology, education, pharmacology, physiology, linguistics, anthropology, business, and law.
