Education

Overall view of hospitals and disciplines

The School of Medicine in The University of Dublin, Trinity College is looking forward to celebrating its Tercentenary in 2011. The School is conscious of its great tradition for bedside teaching and research in Medicine, Surgery and Obstetrics and Gynaecology. In keeping with the many changes that have taken place in the world of Medical Education the School has introduced various changes. The Division of Education, working closely with the Head of School and Vice-Provost for Medical Affairs has developed a 5 year program which is delivered on the main Trinity Campus, in an urban and rural primary care setting and in the main teaching and affiliated specialist hospitals.

Medical education utilises a combination of small group teaching, problem based learning and didactic and bedside teaching. Clinical and communication skills together with ethics are given an important place in the curriculum. Student selected modules and a global health module have been introduced. As the School is part of a larger University all students are encouraged to broaden their education as an undergraduate student. The participation in sport and the multiple cultural activities in the University is encouraged.

The School is closely linked to University Departments taking part in basic scientific and translational medical research. Undergraduate medical students are thus introduced into a research milieu at an early stage in their education. Because of the close link between the undergraduate and postgraduate schools many medical graduates pursue specialist training within the university. The total student experience therefore results in a well-rounded, educated student fully equipped to pursue a career in any branch of medicine and to value the vitally important role of research in their career.
